I have always been fond of cooking and entertaining. As a teenager, my siblings lovingly referred to me as Betty Crocker. Years later, my dream to own a restaurant became a reality. I opened Trumpets Restaurant & Jazz Club in Washington, DC’s historic neighborhood, Dupont Circle. Trumpets became the setting for some of the city's finest jazz entertainment and was known for its innovative repertoire of food and music. Food critics raved about the menu and informed readers to save room for Trumpet’s homemade sweet potato pie, peach, apple and blueberry cobblers. Years later I found it extremely difficult to survive due to the economic crisis that hit the country during the 1990's. Consequently, I sold Trumpets.
Several years later my brother John started a catering business, Chef On Demand. I was happy to make desserts for his business. Subsequently, his customers and friends would order desserts for holidays and other occasions. My brother is no longer with us but he will always be in our hearts. He has inspired me to continue baking. My great granddaughter, Chanel, who lovingly refers to me as “Sweety Pie” was the inspiration behind the name of my business, Sweety Pies and Cakes.
As you browse my website, you will note the many desserts that have become the cornerstones of my business and that were inspired by so many people and experiences including my work on Capitol Hill. Countless times I was asked to bake cakes for office parties, holiday parties and professional events. Don’t forget to try my renowned Lemon Galliano Liqueur Pound Cake ... it will melt in your mouth !
